First, we’ll talk about the origin of pipe smoking, mainly because it’s useful to know where such an ancient hobby came from. Then, we’ll clear up some common misconceptions about pipe smoking and pipe smokers as a whole. I’ll then cover some benefits of pipe smoking to reinforce my argument as to why you should try it. Pipe smoking is an intellectual hobby, and those who have the pleasure of dabbling in it, never stop.

The Origin of Pipe Smoking

I’ve covered the history of pipe smoking in another article, but I’ll give you a quick synopsis, so you can grasp the concept. The earliest pipes were found in Ancient Egypt circa 2000 B.C. Pipe smoking made its way to England in the mid 16th century and became an extremely popular pastime. C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Sherlock Holmes are amongst the famous pipe smokers from England.

Native Americans were considered the first pipe smokers in America. They would use pipes to communicate with the spirits, and the buzz they got from the smoke, signaled that the communication went through. During the Civil War, soldiers would smoke pipes while they were idling waiting in between battles. During World War I, pipe tobacco was sent to soldiers, so they could smoke while they were living in the trenches. Throughout the war, it wasn’t uncommon to see blood and gore, which is why tobacco was used to alleviate the violence the soldiers witnessed.

Common Misconceptions

There are many common misconceptions that are associated with pipe smoking. For example, many think that pipe smoking is “grandfatherly,” or reserved for older gentleman (Tobacco Business, 2017).
